What is Third Party Only Car Insurance?

This type of insurance is designed to cover damage to other people’s vehicles or property and compensation for injuries to others if you’re at fault in an accident. However, it won’t cover repairs to your car or your medical expenses if you’re injured in a crash that’s deemed your fault. You’ll be responsible for these costs yourself.

What’s Not Covered by Third Party Insurance?

❌ Repairs to your own car after an accident.
❌ Replacement costs if your car is stolen or damaged by fire.
❌ Medical expenses for your injuries, such as rehabilitation or treatment costs.
❌ Loss of personal belongings in your car, such as your phone or laptop.

If you require these protections, you may want to consider third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive insurance.

How Does Third Party Insurance Work in an Accident?

If you’re at fault: Your insurer will handle claims from the other driver or affected parties, including covering the cost of vehicle repairs or personal injury claims. You will need to pay for repairs to your own car out of pocket. This could also impact your no-claims discount, unless it’s protected.

If you’re not at fault: You can claim against the other driver’s insurance policy for any damages or injuries. Your no-claims bonus shouldn’t be affected as you’re not making a claim on your policy.

When Might Third Party Insurance Be a Good Option?

Third party insurance might be suitable if:

  • Your car is inexpensive or old, and repairs may cost more than the vehicle’s value.
  • You can afford to pay for your own repairs or replacements if necessary.
  • You don’t use your car often, so the risk of accidents is lower.
