As of early 2026, you must know the basics of first aid, CPR and how to use an AED machine.
This shows you know how to respond in case of an accident or incident.
You’ll need to complete a set of hazard perception clips. During this section you’ll be required to identify developing hazards on the road.
This shows you are aware of your surroundings and can spot emerging hazards when on the road.
To prepare properly for your theory test, revision is essential. Learning through driving lessons or private practice alone is usually not enough, as many theory test questions cover topics that may not come up during everyday driving.
Make sure you read The Highway Code, use revision apps, and take mock tests to familiarise yourself with the format and question style. Using a mix of revision methods can help improve confidence and retention.

Find out moreYou can book your theory test online through the GOV.UK website. The test costs £23, and you’ll need your provisional driving licence to make a booking.
You’ll be able to choose from available time slots at test centres in your area. If you need to change your booking, this can be done online. As long as there are more than three full working days between your original and new test date, you won’t need to pay again.
You can move your test to an earlier or later date or change the test centre if needed.
After your driving theory test, you’ll receive your results immediately. To pass, you must score at least 43 out of 50 on the multiple-choice questions and 44 out of 75 on the hazard perception test.
If you pass, you’ll be given a pass certificate, which is valid for two years. You’ll need this certificate when booking your practical driving test. Once you have passed and feel test-ready, you can book your driving test online. Remember, your theory test pass lasts 2 years.
If you fail, you’ll be shown which areas you didn’t score well in. This feedback can help guide your revision before retaking the test. You must wait three days before rebooking, so use this time to reflect and prepare thoroughly to avoid unnecessary costs.

In total you have 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete the test. This is maximum of 57 minutes for the multiple choice questions, a 3 minute break, and maximum of 20 minutes for hazard perception. You don’t need to use the full time on the day.

Your theory test certificate is valid for two years from the day you pass. This means if you don’t pass the practical driving test within this time, you will have to retake the theory test.
