What is driving test insurance?
Driving test insurance is cover that allows you to take your driving test in a car that isn’t your instructor’s, such as your own, a parent’s, or a friend’s vehicle. It ensures you’re fully insured during the test and for any last-minute practice before it.
You can choose short-term learner driver insurance if you just need cover for a few days around your test, or an annual policy if you’re still building up experience before you pass. There’s no black box, no curfews, and the car owner’s No Claims Bonus is protected if you have an accident*.
This makes Collingwood’s learner insurance perfect if:
- You’re taking your driving test in a car that isn’t your instructor’s
- You want a few extra days of practice before your test
- You don’t already have learner driver insurance in place
*Terms, conditions and underwriting criteria apply.
Can I take my driving test in my own car?

Perks with Collingwood
Who can supervise a learner driver for practice and the test?
To supervise a learner driver, the accompanying driver must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Hold a full UK or EU driving licence for at least 3 years for same type of vehicle as the learner (e.g. a manual or automatic licence)
- Sit in the front passenger at all times
During the test, the examiner will sit in the front passenger seat, not the supervising driver.
After your driving test, whether you pass or fail you must not drive the car back home. Your supervising driver will be covered to take you directly home after the test.
If you do pass your test, well done! As you are no longer a learner driver your policy with us will need to be cancelled and we can help you find full licence cover.
