Cancelling your learner insurance
Find out everything you need to know about cancelling your annual or short-term learner driver insurance policy.
Annual policies
For annual learner driver insurance customers there may be fees that apply when you cancel your policy.
Will I get a refund if I cancel?
It depends on when you cancel and how long you’ve been insured.
Quick summary – Cancellation costs
- Cancel before your policy starts: You get a full refund
- Cancel within 14 days: You pay for the days used, plus a fee
- Cancel later in Year 1: You may still have a balance to pay
- If you pay monthly: You are unlikely to get a refund after the first month
- If you pass your test: Your policy must end and these rules still apply
Year 1

You’ll get back all the money you’ve paid, including any fees.
You only pay for the days your insurance has been active, plus your new business arrangement fee.
If you pay monthly, your payments may not have covered the full cost of the policy yet. This means you may still have a balance to pay when you cancel.
Anything you’ve paid over this amount will be refunded.
Learner insurance costs more at the start because the risk is higher early on. This helps keep the upfront price lower.
This means you may still have a balance to pay when you cancel.
If you haven’t made a claim, the insurer will work out what is still due using a set scale. This is called short period rates.
Most of the cost is in the early months, so the sooner you cancel, the more may still be payable.
You may also need to pay:
| £75 | Non-refundable new business arrangement fee (if not already paid) |
| £40 | Cancellation processing fee |
| Plus | Any premium still due, based on the scale below |
If you pay monthly, any unpaid part of your arrangement fee may be included in the balance you owe.
How much insurance premium will I need to pay?
The earlier you cancel, the less of the premium has been earned, so more may still be payable
| If you cancel in | What you pay | What does this mean for you |
| Month 1 | 25% | You pay a quarter of your total premium, plus any fees. |
| Month 2 | 40% | You pay nearly half of your total premium, plus any fees. |
| Month 3 | 50% | You pay half of your total premium, plus any fees. |
| Month 4 | 60% | You pay more than half of your total premium, plus any fees. |
| Month 5 | 70% | You pay most of your total premium, plus any fees. |
| Month 6 | 75% | You pay three‑quarters of your total premium, plus any fees. |
| Month 7 | 80% | You pay almost all your premium, plus any fees. |
| Month 8 | 90% | You pay nearly the full amount, plus any fees. If you have already paid the full annual premium, you will not receive a refund as you pay the full annual premium, plus a £40 cancellation processing fee. |
| Month 9-12 | 100% | You pay the full amount, plus any fees. If you have already paid the full annual premium, you will not receive a refund as you pay the full annual premium, plus a £40 cancellation processing fee. |
Year 2 – Onwards

You have a 14‑day cooling‑off period.
If you cancel during this time (including if you pass your practical driving test), the insurer will only charge you for the days you were insured. Anything extra you’ve paid will be refunded.
If you pay monthly, any unpaid part of your renewal arrangement fee may be included in the balance you owe.
If you cancel after the cooling‑off period, and no claims or incidents have been made or reported, the insurer will refund the part of your premium for the days you won’t be insured.
As your intermediary, we charge a £40 cancellation processing fee if you or your insurer cancels the policy before the full 12 months is completed.
If you pay monthly, any unpaid part of your renewal arrangement fee may be included in the balance you owe.
Short Term Policies
Before cancelling, please check:
How long your current policy is for
When it started and when it ends
Customers sometimes take out short term policies one after another. This can make it to think your cover runs for longer than it does.
Any refund depends on the length of your current policy, not previous ones.
Your policy documents will confirm the start and end date of your current policy.
If you cancel within the first 14 days, you will get a refund for the unused days.
Your £23.50 arrangement fee is not refundable.
We don’t charge a cancellation processing fee on short‑term policies.
There is no refund on short‑term policies.
We don’t charge a cancellation processing fee on short‑term policies, but the arrangement fee is non-refundable.
Frequently asked questions about cancellations
We know passing your test is a big moment.
Because learner insurance is only for provisional licence holders, your policy must be cancelled when you pass. This is because the policy does not cover full licence holders and you will need full licence insurance.
We’ll then work out if you’re due a refund, or if there is a balance to pay. This is based on how long you have been insured and the terms of your policy.
Your policy will be cancelled from the date and time you have selected.
Our team then review your cancellation and confirm the cancellation by email. This will also explain whether:
you’re due a refund, or there’s a remaining balance to pay. This usually takes 1–2 business days.
Please don’t cancel any payments until you hear from us.
No, your policy no longer covers you as a full licence holder and will need to be cancelled.
As soon as you pass your test you should contact us as you will no longer be covered. If you continue driving with the incorrect insurance you risk, fines, points on your licence and insurer cancellations.
For annual policies you have signed up to a year long contract with us for your insurance. When you cancel early we are not getting the full premium agreed which is why there are cancellation fees applied.
If your policy runs for the full 12 months and lapses there will be no fees to pay.
For short-term policies 8 weeks or longer you will get a refund for unused days in the 14 day cooling off period. For policies shorter than 8 weeks there are no refunds.
