Please remember, with a Collingwood Learner driver policy you are not covered to drive on motorways so please check the routes before you set off on a journey! You also always need a supervising driver with you in the front passenger’s seat whenever you practice driving.

1- Hit the beach or pool!

Firstly, an obvious summer activity is a beach trip! If you are lucky enough to live close to the beach, it is a great place to spend a summer day. Hop in the car, drive to the supermarket for some snacks, fizzy drinks and suncream and head to the beach. There you can have a dip in the sea, collect rocks, chat and have fun! With added driving practice on coastal roads on the way!

If you don’t have a beach close, you could find a local pool to go for a swim! On the way there you could practice following road signs and practice driving in residential areas

2- Visit a local park or forest

However, if you do not have a beach close by, we are sure you have a local park or forest nearby!

Local green spaces are perfect for a summer stroll, soaking up some sun or enjoying a picnic. This is a great way to get some fresh air and practice driving without much prep! You can practice driving through country roads or use a sat nav to test your navigation skills in preparation for your practical driving test.

3- Host a BBQ

Even having a BBQ at home gives you opportunities for driving practice!

BBQ’s are a great summer activity to bring family and friends together. So, get to the supermarket to stock up on hot dogs and burgers. While practicing your bay parking in the car park. Then drive to get some extra refreshments or games to keep everyone entertained!

There is also a chance to practice driving with passengers, if you are feeling confident. Go and pick up your friends and family so they can join in on the fun. Make sure you let them know you are still learning and ask them to be considerate! If you are a new learner driver it may be best for guests to make their own way as they may cause distractions.

4- Go to a local market or car boot sale!

If there are local markets or car boots happening over the summer in your area it is a good way to have a day in the sun and grab some bargains. You can practice driving on new roads and navigating busy areas you may not have encountered yet.

5- Road Trip!

Although you cannot drive on motorways with Collingwood Learner Drive Insurance. This does not mean you cannot explore a new city or go on a road trip. If you are insured on someone else’s car, or if you have an additional driver on your own car, they can drive on the motorways to a different city. When you get there, you can then take over and drive around the city and explore.

By doing this you can practice driving by following road signs and navigating in a new place. This can help you to feel more confident with driving away from your local area!

6- Try a new hobby

Summer is a great time to try new things! The weather is warm and usually not raining! This is a great time to get outdoors to try new sports, activities, and hobbies. Search your local area to find any classes or workshops that you could join.

Alternatively, you can go out and buy supplies and try out a new hobby on your own! Practice driving to the shop and buy a skateboard, roller-skates a bike or something else and start a new hobby over the summer!

7- Visit a museum or art gallery

If you have museums or art galleries in your town you can check to see what exhibitions they have running. You can then visit and take in the art and culture. You could even make a day of it and visit all of the museums in your area in one day.

8- Go camping

Camping is the prefect summer activity with warm and dry weather! Pack up your car with camping gear and hit the road for a camping adventure.

This is a great opportunity to practice driving on rural roads and with passengers in the car. Make sure you do not over pack your car and can see clearly. You should also check your tyres if you are adding a lot of extra weight in the vehicle.

9- Game night or movie night

Invite your friends over for games and movies. Then, drive to get supplies such as snacks, fizzy drinks or a takeout! You could go and browse a local store to find a new video game or board game that you can all play together. You can even go and pick up your friends (and their controllers) to join. This can be a great summer activity for evenings to chill out and relax.

10- Work or volunteer!

Over the summer break you have a great opportunity to build up your CV while giving back to the community. You can practice driving to work (if your supervising driver is with you), meaning you can get out there and gain work experience and also driving experience! You may find travelling the same road to work helps you get used to it whilst making you more confident.

When you are looking for volunteer opportunities, you can look for local charity shops or food banks to see if they need a helping hand. Alternatively, For jobs, you could try babysitting, dog walking, or ask around local stores if they need a hand.
