Production of the Ford Fiesta may be coming to an end this month; however new research has revealed that the car remains one of the UK’s most popular models for learner drivers.

We analysed over 40,000 learner driver insurance policies and found that 12.8% of learners in the first six months of 2023 opted for the Fiesta.

Ford last year announced that it would cease production of the model at its factory in Cologne this month [June 2023], bringing to an end 47 years of the car.

The decision to cease production however has done little to dent its popularity, with first time drivers still seemingly opting for the supermini car.

The Vauxhall Corsa followed closely in second place (11.7%), with the Volkswagen Polo (7.3%), Fiat 500 (4.4%) and Renault Clio (3.5%) rounding off the top five.

Completing the top ten were the Mini (3.2%), Ford Ka (2.5%), Volkswagen Golf (2.4%), Ford Focus (2.3%) and Citroen C1(2.1%).

League table of the UK's most popular cars for learner drivers

Liz Laidler, Head of Learner Driver Products here at Collingwood, said: “The Ford Fiesta has long been one of the nation’s most popular cars for learner drivers and if this research is anything to go by, it’s popularity is certainly showing no signs of waning.

“Of the top ten cars insured on learner driver policies during the first six months of the year, there was only the Vauxhall Corsa and the Volkswagen Polo which proved almost as popular as the Fiesta, proving that small hatchbacks remain the go-to car for learners.”

Learner driver insurance protects learner drivers while they practice driving on public roads in their own car.

Collingwood is one of the UK’s leading providers of learner driving insurance and has seen demand for its policies increase over recent years.

Liz added: “Learner driver insurance is a fantastic way for budding drivers to build their skills, confidence and their no-claims bonus, familiarising themselves with their own car, even before they pass their test.

“Generally, it’s a lot cheaper than full licence insurance, with learners often paying less than £300 per year for their own cover, and it provides the adequate protection for those wishing to practice in their own car, which has led to us seeing a huge increase in demand over recent years as more and more learner drivers realise the benefits of learner driver insurance.”
