If you’re looking at partaking in private practice with a friend or family member in addition to driving lessons, you will need to be correctly insured. But what happens if you’re a learner driver and you already have points on your licence or a driving offence?
You may think that it’s impossible to get insured on a learner driver policy, but that isn’t always the case. Let’s take a closer look at the likelihood of getting insured as a learner driver with points or endorsements.
Points on a Provisional Licence?
When you drive under supervision with a provisional licence, you’re not exempt from accruing points, or worse, receiving a driving ban. For example, if you use a mobile phone while driving under a provisional licence, you may still receive six penalty points.
You can also accrue points on your provisional licence if you’re required to re-apply for it because of receiving six or more penalty points as a newly qualified driver.
‘Ask The Police’ the official policing questions website states, “If you receive six or more penalty points within 2 years of passing your first test you will automatically have your licence revoked.”
In order to get back behind the wheel, you will need to apply and pay for a new provisional licence, and pass both theory (including hazard perception) and practical driving tests again. This is a prime example of a provisional licence holder historically accruing penalty points.
Can you Get Learner Driver Insurance with Points or Convictions?
Like most things when it comes to motor insurance, it depends on the policy of the insurance company in question. Here at Collingwood Insurance, we only consider accepting drivers with points under very specific conditions. If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the following questions, Collingwood Insurance will NOT be able to offer insurance to you.
Have you received any of the following endorsement codes in the last 5 years, or have any pending?
Codes CD40, CD50, CD60, CD70, CD80, CD90
Codes prefixed by ‘AC’, ‘DD’, ‘DG’, ‘DR’ or ‘UT’
Codes MS40, MS50, MS60, MS70, MS80
Do you currently have more than 6 penalty points on your licence or would any pending convictions cause you to have more than 6 penalty points on your licence?
Are you currently disqualified or banned from driving?
Have you ever been declined insurance, had a policy cancelled or special terms imposed?
